I. BIBLE READINGS IN SYNAGOGUES A. Public Bible reading, study, teaching: 1. As we have seen elsewhere in this book, Synagogues began in 280 BC at Alexandria, as a direct result of Antiochus II translating the Hebrew scriptures into Greek (Septuagint). a. 75: Matthew was NOT originally written in Hebrew: JW's are false ...
Goodspeed argues at length that it would be contrary to Greek practice to name a Greek translation after the author of an Aramaic original, for Greeks were concerned only with the one who put a work into Greek. As examples he cites the Gospel of Mark (it was not called the Gospel of Peter) and the Greek Old Testament, which was called the Septuagint (Seventy) after its translators, not after its Hebrew authors (E. 77: Book of Hosea: Bible textual variants analysed
... Some scholars suggest that it was damaged when it was carried to the South after the fall of the northern kingdom, a suggestion that implies that Hosea himself did not escape southward. Other scholars point to peculiar northern dialectic difficulties that make the text hard to read. Reconstruction of difficult passages often requires reference to the Greek Septuagint or, less frequently, to the Syriac, Latin, and Aramaic versions. These instances will be noted in the commentary. However, it is my practice to emend the Hebrew Scriptures only when absolutely necessary in order ... The Greek Septuagint (LXX) was again helpful in many places to correct the Hebrew text of the book. Fortunately, the storyline of Hosea is simple and easy to follow in the larger picture, in spite of the variants. The message of Hosea is clear: Worship God alone or he will divorce us and we will end up in Hell. If we repent, our loving God will take us back in spite of how we hurt Him! In the final analysis, ... ...

... Indeed, there are examples where Jesus' quotations of and allusions to scripture agree with some Greek versions against others. Jesus' use of the Bible attests the diversity of the textual tradition that now, thanks to the Scrolls, is more fully documented. C. Agreements with the Aramaic There are also several important examples of agreement with the Aramaic tradition, which arose in the synagogue and eventually assumed written form as the Targum. These examples will be treated in more detail. There are significant examples in which Jesus' language agrees with the Aramaic tradition. 1. The paraphrase of Isa 6:9-10 in Mark 4:12 concludes with " . . . and it be forgiven them." Only the Isaiah Targum reads this way. The Hebrew and the Septuagint read "heal."
