51: Why Are There Different Versions Of The Bible???
Translation of the Greek New Testament is a very precise science. The New American Standard Bible, for example, was translated over 10 years, by over 45 scholars and was first published in 1962 AD. Similar painstaking work was applied to the production of the New International (1978 AD), and King James (1611AD) and the New King James (1982AD). These translations and others like them were the products of many years of work from scholars from many denominations. Each translation has its own strengths and weaknesses. The King James Version (KJV) is excellent, but you must use a dictionary as you read because it uses language typical of the time it was translated (1611). I recommend you purchase a more recent translation. The New American Standard Version (NASV) is believed by many to be one of the most accurate translations and is an excellent study Bible. The American Standard Version (ASV) is also excellent and highy accurate. The New King James Version (NKJV) is high on the ... ...

52: Trinity proof texts: John 8:58
... Anti-Trinitarian rebuttal #4 In Ex 3:14 "I am" is used as a title. To consider the words "EGO EIMI" as a term of self-designation (name or title) leaves the sentence without a main verb and would therefore not be a intelligible complete sentence. For example, The statement "Before Abraham was born, Fred." makes no sense. "Was Jesus there teaching, as Trinitarians assert, that he was known by the title "I Am"? And, as they claim, does this mean that he was Jehovah of the Hebrew Scriptures, since the King James Version at Exodus 3:14 states: "God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM"?" ... The expression at John 8:58 is quite different from the one used at Exodus 3:14. Jesus did not use it as a name or a title but as a means of explaining his prehuman existence." (Should you believe the trinity? Watchtower publication) Anti-Trinitarian rebuttal #4 refuted Neither Ex 3:14 or John 8:58 are titles or names of God, but simple powerful statements of eternal, timeless nature. It also says of John 1:1: "The qualitative force of the predicate is so prominent that the noun [the·os'] cannot be regarded as definite." So John 1:1 highlights the quality of the Word, that he was "divine," "godlike," "a god," but not Almighty God." (Philip B. Harner, "Qualitative Anarthrous Predicate Nouns: Mark 15:39 and John 1:1." in The Journal of Biblical Literature, as quoted in, Should you believe the Trinity?, Watchtower publication) Someone who is "with" another person cannot also be that other person. Note, however, that here again the context lays the groundwork for accurate understanding. Even the King James Version says, "The Word was with God." (Italics ours.) Someone who is "with" another person cannot be the same as that other person. In agreement with this, the Journal of Biblical Literature, edited by Jesuit Joseph A. Fitzmyer, notes that if the latter part of John 1:1 were interpreted to mean "the" God, this "would then contradict the preceding clause," which ... ...

... Heinrich Bunting Hem, lived in Germany during the Renaissance, in the 16th century. This is the century the Protestant revolution took place in Germany. It appears that he was one of the few Renaissance cartographers who understood the Gulf of Aqaba. He has a north Suez crossing, Kadesh Barnea south of Beersheba and places Midian at Elat at the north end of the Gulf of Aqaba. The map is clearly early since it still uses the letter "i" in place of "J" in the alphabet which the KJV of 1611 also used. The King James Version of 1611 spells Jesus' name as "Iesus" (iesus). In 1762 AD, Carsten Niebuhr is one of the first to actually draw the Gulf of Aqaba somewhat correctly, although his understanding was limited. He also placed the "Straights of Tiran" on the map! This is the crossing point of the Red Sea, although he probably didn't know it at the time. However he incorrectly mapped the north end of the Gulf of Aqaba as a "forked tongue". Refuted: "Sixty Questions On The Godhead" (UPCI) Modalism Refuted! Anti-Trinitarian! United Pentecostal Church's: "Sixty Questions On The Godhead" Refuted! Click to View See modalism as taught by the UPCI Refuted at: Modalism Before noticing the questions we wish to make certain observations: It appears the questions are based upon the King James Version. The author of the questions seems unaware that the words Lord, LORD, God, GOD are translated from various Hebrew and Greek words. When LORD and GOD appear in the King James Version they translate the Hebrew word Yahweh (or the contraction Jah) which the American Standard Version renders Jehovah. The plural Hebrew word Eloheem is translated God. Lord and God do not always refer to each other. The author of the questions was either unaware of 2 - 5 or else ignored those facts. The expression Holy Spirit is a descriptive basically meaning separate Spirit. Godhead is an old English word for Godhood (That which makes God, God). In the New ... ...

77: False Doctrine of Modalism: As taught by the United Pentecostal ...
... Such intimate hair splitting of Greek violates the obvious meaning of John 1:1. UPC's are in the same camp as Jehovah's Witnesses who also argue from the Greek that Jn 1:1 should read, "and the word was "A" god". UPC's and Jw's are both dead wrong in their views and translation of the Greek! If Jn 1:1 should read, "in the beginning was the Word and the Word was pertaining to God and the Word was God." At least one reputable translation would render it such. Interesting that the United Pentecostal Church is also a "rabidly and blind" defender of the superiority of the King James Version who feel that the KJV translators were actually inspired of the Holy Spirit in their translation from the "Textus Receptus". UPC views the KJV as God's perfect translation. (see www.bible.ca/b-kjv-only.htm) Funny when the KJV refutes UPC doctrine, they reject the KJV and opt for alternate translations no in the KJV!!! ... Problem is that it is John the apostle who said Jesus was "calling God his Father, making himself out equal with God." This in fact is true! So take careful note that John, as the narrator the Gospel of John, flat out states that Jesus was "calling God his Father, making himself out equal with God." Click here for a detailed look at John 5:18. "Equal With God"? AT PHILIPPIANS 2:6 the Catholic Douay Version (Dy) of 1609 says of Jesus: "Who being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God." The King James Version (KJ) of 1611 reads much the same. A number of such versions are still used by some to support the idea that Jesus was equal to God. 79: Anglo/British-Israelism: A DETAILED REFUTATION
... The Hebraic in sound and sense, it is claimed, is Saxon-so Saxons are Hebraic, therefore Israel. This argument becomes a tacit admission that Anglo-Israelism is a doctrine that no English reader could ever learn from the English Bible. The one hundred and forty-eight translators of the King James and the American Standard versions did not translate the British-Israel idea into our English texts. Here is a sample of an Anglo-Israel argument. In the magazine DESTINY, the leading Anglo-Israel ... It is a known fact that all through the centuries, before and after the time of Martin Luther, Germany has furnished some of the most learned and pious scholars and commentators the religious world has ever known. Philip Schaff, renowned scholar, historian, Bible commentator, and chairman of the revision committee of the American Standard Revised Version was a German. 80: A Short History of the Watchtower Organization
... It meant that this Adventist splinter group had not remained defeated, as others had, when Christ failed to appear in 1874 as Adventist leaders had predicted; somehow this small group had managed to hold onto the date by affirming that the Lord had indeed returned at the appointed time, only invisibly. Was this mere wishful thinking, coupled with a stubborn refusal to admit the error of failed chronological calculations? Perhaps, but Barbour had some arguments to offer in support of his assertions. In particular, he came up with a basis for reinterpreting the Second Coming as an invisible event: In Benjamin Wilson's Emphatic Diaglott translation of the New Testament the word rendered coming in the King James Version at Matthew 24:27, 37, 39 is translated presence instead. This served as the basis for Barbour's group to advocate, in addition to their time calculations, an invisible presence of Christ. Although the idea appealed to young Charles Taze Russell, the reading public ... ...

82: The false doctrine of Roman Catholic apostolic succession!
... This is another example of their twisting of the Scriptures to prove their own doctrine. The Greek word "presbyter" does not mean "priest" and no reputable Greek scholar has ever rendered it as such. The word simply means "an old man, an elder." He had to have "believing children" (Titus 1:6), and, thus, only older men were qualified. Catholic officials in their translations of Scripture insert the word "priest" into verses where it does not belong. In the Catholic Rheims Version, Acts 14:23 is translated, "And when they had ordained to them priests in every church..." All reputable Versions of the Scriptures, the King James, New King James, American Standard, New American Standard, etc., render this verse, "And when they had ordained elders in every church..." The word used in the verse is "presbuteros," which mean "elders" and not the word "hiereus" which is "priests." When one checks all the Greek texts, he finds that no variations exist; each contain the word "presbuteros." We can ... ...

God's written Word, therefore, is man's sole unerring guide from earth to heaven. It is the standard by which all men will be judged in the last day (John 12:48; Rom. 2:16; James 2:12; Rev. 20:12). Catholics affirm that God, instead of making His written Word the sole infallible guide, made the Catholic Church an infallible authority. "God from all eternity did by the most wise and holy counsel of his own will freely and unchangeably ordain whatsoever comes to pass ... (The Confession of Faith of the Presbyterian Church, U.S.A., from chapter 111, entitled "Of God's Eternal Decree") "Unconditional Election" is a fancy phrase that refers to what is commonly known as "Predestination." 87: Seven Myths Of Denominationalism!
... The verb denominate is used throughout this book with the meaning of to give a name to with the intent of distinguishing one group from another. Thus, a denomination is a religious organization which has been distinguished from all others by the assignment of a unique name. Those organizations which have as one of their beliefs that they (as an organization) are part of the universal church of Christ (along with all others) will be called the denominations. The doctrines which are generally accepted by all of these groups will be collectively referenced as denominationalism. QUOTATIONS Biblical quotations are from the King James version of the Holy Bible. This is not an endorsement of the King James version -- we have chosen it because it is the most widespread and available valid version. We believe that God's divine providence has assured that the truth can be ascertained from any valid translation. 95: Has the Bible been lost, altered or corrupted over time?
Has the Bible been lost, altered or corrupted over time? When we read the Bible today can we be assured that we are reading in our language the same word of God that was contained in the original manuscripts? It is often claimed by skeptics and agnostics that we cannot be sure of this. They point out that the common English Bible, the King James Version, is based upon late medieval manuscripts and that in these manuscripts there are thousands of variations or differences. They point to the later English translations that differ from the King James, not only in the rendering of the language, but often in whole verses, sentences, or even paragraphs being left out. They say here is confusion, and since we don't have the original autographs, we don't really know that we have the Bible. In the face of these doubts the informed Christian and student of the Bible affirms his complete confidence in the fact that we have God's inspired word today.
