301: Why I left the Pentecostal church
... All one had to do was hear the simple word of truth, believe it, confess Christ as the Son of God, repent of ones sins, and be baptized into the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ for remission of sins. 302: Josh McDowell's Powerful Evidience for Resurrection
Here are some of the facts relevant to the resurrection: Jesus of Nazareth, a Jewish prophet who claimed to be the Christ prophesied in the Jewish Scriptures, was arrested, was judged a political criminal, and was crucified. Three days after His death and burial, some women who went to His tomb found the body gone. In subsequent weeks, His disciples claimed that God had raised Him from the dead and that He appeared to them various times before ascending into heaven. From that foundation, Christianity spread throughout the Roman Empire and has continued to exert great influence down through the centuries. LIVING WITNESSES The New Testament accounts of the resurrection were being circulated within ... 304: William Barclay: Many Witnesses, One Lord
... I do not see God's omnipotence in Jesus for there are things which Jesus could not do (William Barclay, A Spiritual Biography, 1977 Edition, p. 56). We believe in evolution, the slow climb upwards of man from the level of the beasts. Jesus is the end and climax of the evolutionary process because in Him men met God. The danger of the Christian faith is that we set up Jesus as a kind of secondary God. The Bible never, as it were, makes a second God of Jesus. Rather, it stresses the utter dependence of Jesus on God (William ... Had he done so he would have believed the above-mentioned doctrines because they are taught in Scripture. Thus, I feel that William Barclay was not a believer because by no reasonable understanding of the Bible could he be called one. It is the Bible which makes it impossible to claim this man as a fellow believer without emptying Christianity of its basic content (The Bible in the Balance, p. 45). Jehovah's Witnesses are wrong in Acts 2:1-4 because only the 12 apostles were filled, not the 120. However, with this correction their point is unchanged. Jehovah's Witnesses view God too small! ... Greek theology (following the New Testament and early Christian creeds) retains the "monarchy" of the Father who as sole principle of divinity imparts Godhood to Son and Spirit. The Greek approach tends toward subordinationism (though hardly of an ontological kind) or, in some versions, to tritheism since in Greek theology each divine person fully possesses the divine substance. The Latin approach can be represented by a circle or triangle. Because the emphasis is placed on what the divine persons share, Latin theology tends toward modalism (which obscures the distinctiveness of each person). Also the Trinity is presented as self-enclosed and not intrinsically open to the world. Principles of Trinitarian Doctrine. ... The church described in the New Testament is the spiritual body of Christ. The Apostle Paul, speaking of Jesus Christ, says in Ephesians 1:22,23, "And gave him to be head over all things to the church which is his body". A body is a living organism. It is not surprising that the Nicene Creed overemphasizes the equality of Christ with the Father, since Arius' doctrine of a created Christ was its primary target.
