If the written word completely supplants oral tradition as Evangelicals argue, then why did Paul tell the Thessalonians to maintain oral tradition? (THE WAY: What Every Protestant Should Know About the Orthodox Church, Clark Carlton, 1997, p 141)

Refutation of the false Catholic & Orthodox tradition argument: "Paul commanded oral tradition to be followed in 2 Thessalonians 2:15"

Sola Scriptura: Paul did not commanded extra-biblical oral traditions to be followed in 2 Thessalonians 2:15.

The oral tradition being spoken about in 2 Thess 2:15 came directly from the mouth of inspired prophets. We find no one today making the claim of being inspired. If anyone was inspired today, AND WE MEAN ANYONE, then they would be able to confirm this by performing miracles of a kind that not even the enemies or the media could deny. Until then, we follow scripture because oral tradition by nature is unreliable.

Exactly whose oral tradition should we follow between the Catholic and the Orthodox? Both make the claim only they possess true apostolic tradition, yet their oral traditions differ so greatly, they anathematize each other and are not in communion with each other!

Notice the sequence with Tertullian. This living voice was the inspired voice of Jesus and the apostles which Tertullian say, was then recorded in scripture.: 1. Living voice of the apostles. 2. subsequently recorded in their epistles. "From this, therefore, do we draw up our rule. Since the Lord Jesus Christ sent the apostles to preach, ... those very churches which the apostles rounded in person, by declaring the gospel to them directly themselves, both viva voce [living voice], as the phrase is, and subsequently by their epistles. " (Tertullian, The prescription against the heretics, Ch 21).

This shows that the Apostolic Fathers viewed the scriptures as containing the totality of the "living voice". Therefore, even Tertullian operated on sola Scriptura because the only traditions he would accept were those recorded in scripture. When Tertullian does discuss traditions not in scripture, he refers not to the Living voice of the apostles, but of expedient tradition. Learn the difference and be delivered from the deception of the Orthodox and Catholic churches.
