BIBLE KNOWLEDGE, by Jay Bowman

1936 - 2015

{See Note Below}

Members of the churches of Christ used to have the reputation of knowing their Bibles well.

And, I think that reputation was generally correct. But, this situation did not happen by accident. People knew their Bibles because they were willing to spend the time to acquire that knowledge. They studied not only at church but also (and especially) in their homes.

But, times have changed and, I am sorry to say, not for the better. The modern Christian has too many distractions. It takes a tremendous effort by both husband and wife to make a living. And, the drive for success begins even down in the lower grades, affecting every member of the family in one way or another. Career knowledge competes powerfully with Bible, knowledge and, in most cases wins the battle. Television and other forms of entertainment play a great role in robbing the Bible of its just attention.

It is good to remember that God affects our conduct only through the influence of His Word. That is why He has always commanded His people to know the Word carefully and to keep it fresh in their minds. The Word is something we should live with. Remember what God said to Moses and the Israelites:

"...these words which I command you this day shall be upon your heart; and you shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. And you shall bind them as a sign upon your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. And you shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates." Deuteronomy 6:5-9

Make some time for studying God's Word!
