Introduction:

  1. This is a detailed summary page of all the Greek words used in connection with counseling.
  2. We have derived our own definitions based upon what various scholars say and how we see the word used in various contexts.
  3. It is important that we learn from God how to counsel. Let the Bible be our teacher!

A. The councilor must be willing to the Greek!

  1. offer sharp cutting criticism (apotomos, 664)
  2. offer formal instruction, like in school. (didache, 1322, didasko, 1321)
  3. bluntly tell someone they are wrong (Elencho, 1651)
  4. very strongly rebuke, identifying sinful behaviour (epitimao, 2008, elenxis. 1649))
  5. fight like a Jedi Knight for right (epagonizomai, 1864)
  6. When someone is driving in the ditch and you put their car back on the road in the proper lane. (epanorthosis, 1882)
  7. Be patient. Do not be like what happens when you put a match on gasoline. Do not be explosive, fast, instant but slow, unchangeable, patient, suffering for a long time before you have a noticeable change in your actions. (makrothumia, 3115)

B. Greek word definition summary: (our definition in blue text at the end)

  1. apotomos (664) signifies abruptly, curtly, lit., in a manner that cuts (apo, from, temnō, to cut), hence sharply, severely (vine, Sharply) sharp cutting criticism.
  2. didache (1322), denotes teaching, either that which is taught, "doctrine," or the act of teaching, instruction (Vines, doctrine) formal instruction, like in school.
  3. didasko (1321) is used absolutely, to give instruction (vine, teach) formal instruction, like in school.
  4. Elencho (1651), to convict, rebuke, reprove (Vine, Reprove) telling someone they are wrong.
  5. elenxis (1649), akin to Elencho, denotes rebuke (Vine, rebuke). rebuke, identifying sinful behaviour.
  6. epagonizomai (1864) signifies to contend about a thing, as a combatant (Vine, contend) fight like a Jedi Knight.
  7. epanorthosis (1882), lit., a restoration to an upright or right state (epi, to, ana, up, or again, and orthoō, see No. 1), hence, "correction," is used [only one time] of the Scripture in 2 Tim. 3:16, referring to improvement of life and character.   8. epitimao (2008) signifies (a) to put honour upon (epi, upon, timē, honour); (b) to adjudge, to find fault with, rebuke; hence to charge, or rather, to charge strictly (epi, intensive) (Vines, Charge) strongly rebuke.
  9. makrothumia (3115), forbearance, patience, longsuffering (makros, long, thumos, temper), is usually rendered "longsuffering," (Vine, longsuffering) Do not be like what happens when you put a match on gasoline. Do not be explosive, fast, instant but slow, unchangeable, patient, suffering for a long time before you have a noticeable change in your actions.
  10. marturomai (3143), primarily, to summon as witness, then, to bear witness (Vine, testify) speak truth as though in open court.
  11. nouthesia (3559), Lit: a putting in mind (nous, mind, tithēmi, to put) (Vines, Admonish). It is used for every kind of calling to a person which is meant to produce a particular effect, hence, with various meanings, such as comfort, exhort, desire, call for, in addition to its significance to beseech (Vine, Beseech) asking one to put an idea into action, pleading for one to put your words into deeds, pleading for one to take action.
  14. paramutheomai (3888), primarily a speaking closely to anyone (para, near, muthos, speech), hence denotes consolation, comfort, with a greater degree of tenderness, to soothe, console, encourage (vine, comfort) quiet, tender, intimate, soothing, consoling, talk.
  15. sterizo (4741), to fix, make fast, to set (from sterix, a prop), is used of establishing or stablishing (i.e., the confirmation) of persons; the Apostle Peter was called by the Lord to establish his brethren (Vine, establish) to fix as with a nail so it will not move.

Conclusion:

  1. When we let the Bible be our guide, we learn the correct pattern of how to counsel.
  2. Chemical psychiatry is devoid of truth, purpose meaning or results. They generally resort to drugs.
  3. Biblical psychiatry, on the other hand will successfully cure mentally ill people.
