White were kept. Historically, access was highly restricted. Even SDA Pastors and leaders were highly restricted from viewing certain documents of E.G White's writings and diaries. Access to certain sections was simply not permitted. It is generally understood that access was restricted because if the information about White became public, it would devastate the SDA denomination. In this regard, the SDA's share another quality with the Mormons (Joseph Smith) in that both were born of the same time and both house a vault of documents that only the highest officials are permitted access to. After the death of Arthur White in about 1995 a new era of openness began. William Fagal, director of the Ellen White estate at Andrews University, said in an e-mail letter sent to this website dated Sun, 27 Apr 1997, 07:56, "Such access, by the way, is not limited to seminary students. We help inquirers regardless of whether they are students at the university. I tell those who ask, There isn't anything we have that we won't show you." If William Fagal's comment refers to any and all documents in the control of the White estate, or simply the small portion of original documents housed at Andrews University, we are not sure. But such a statement allowing total access is certainly a sharp and abrupt departure with a longstanding policy of restriction put in place by the White Estate. If any one questions the historical accuracy of our statement, we suggest they merely call, write or contact any of a long list of current and former SDA leaders. You could begin by contacting those at this location: click here. We talked to several who made comments ranging from, "Their current openness may be only after making good use of a shredding machine." Another, "Nothing has really changed, the White estate has always claimed they restrict nothing but those higher up and on the inside know the truth." So there you have it. William Fagal has now claimed that access to 100% of the documents in the control of the White estate are 100% open to access by EVERYONE. If you have an experience of restricted access please write us and we will place your letter at our site. We will also modify any part of our site if we have misrepresented the truth.
