1: Evangelistic, Small-group Home Bible Studies
Bible and accomplish two things. If we invited non-Christians to attend a small-group home study versus church services, a much higher ratio of people would attend a home study. People feel much more at ease, so they are more likely to return. One of the advantages of these home studies is that every member, regardless of Bible knowledge, can be evangelistic. In John 1:40-42, Andrew, a new disciple, brought Peter to Jesus. New Christians can immediately bring their family and friends to the weekly home studies. This is very important because statistics prove that new Christians have a great potential for influencing others to come to Christ even though they are the least equipped to actually teach. Another plus: If a non-Christian has attended a group study and is eventually baptized, he has already developed those important personal relationships with at least four other Christians. This accomplishes two things: it makes for a smooth and natural bridge to regular assembly attendance, ... ...

2: Evangelistic, Small-group Home Bible Studies: Tips for success ...
Here is the tool I currently use to invite people. I walk up to someone and say, Hello, I attend a small-group Bible study that is hosted in a home. We try to apply the Bible to our lives and learn from the life of Jesus. We are looking for new people to come. Would you be interested? If they appear interested at all, you must ask for their phone number! If they won't give it, leave them a card. If they say that they work evenings and couldn't attend, flip the card over and ask them if they want the first lesson of a free Bible correspondence course. Say, You can study the Bible in the privacy of your own home at your own speed. Just fill in your name, address, and phone number and I will see that you get lesson one. Generally, you will have to invite 50 people (50 attempts to establish a dialogue) to get one person who holds promise. Develop the routine of devoting one hour a week to intensive inviting in the parks, malls, campuses, etc. It takes boldness; but if you develop the ... ...

The Amazing Telecomputer! Click to View A telecomputer will generate between 100 and 200 enrollments in a correspondence course each month. It can be programmed to automatically phone every number in your city at a rate of 1,000 a day, play a prerecorded message (your voice), ask the listener a number of questions, record their answers, ask for their name and address, and then automatically record their phone number. At the end of each day, the responses are played back from a cassette tape and the first lesson of the correspondence course is mailed to them. But how do you actually get from a name on a piece of paper to a one-on-one study? You phone each one of them 30 days later. Anyone can easily program the telecomputer to dial 10 telephone exchanges (100,000 numbers) in about 60 seconds. It will continue to phone numbers from 9 a.m. till 9 p.m., seven days a week. 6: Evangelistic Tent Meetings
They are more effective in rural areas than in urban areas. The Jule Miller Film Strips are a great help in teaching. Tent meetings take a lot of physical work and a lot of looking after details. There is a good bit of damage, wear and loss--on pickup truck, trailer, tent, poles, lights, generator, amplifier and speaker, benches, speaker's stand, projector, song books, etc. It is not a one-man job. Brethren accompanying David are very helpful. Each meeting is different. You have to take things as you find them. Ability to handle drunks is helpful! The home classes and other calls made during the day are an essential part of a tent meeting's success. Even with the best kind of pre-baptism teaching and follow-up effort, one-half of the number baptized will prove to be still-born. Without good follow-up teaching, most of the others baptized will fall away. Years prove that some will continue to be faithful, and all the effort was justified. 7: Traditional churches reaching untraditional converts
Kinda esoteric and very, very bright. He became a Christian while attending college. Across the street from the campus is a well-dressed, very conservative church. They want to develop a ministry to the students, but are not sure how to go about it. One day Bill decides to go there. He walks in with no shoes, jeans, his T-shirt, and wild hair. The service has already started and so Bill starts down the aisle looking for a seat. The church is completely packed and he can't find a seat. By now people are looking a bit uncomfortable, but no one says anything. Bill gets closer and closer and closer to the pulpit and when he realizes there are no seats, he just squats down right on the carpet. (Although perfectly acceptable behavior at a college fellowship, trust me, this had never happened in this church before!) By now the people are really uptight, and the tension in the air is thick. About this time, the minister realizes that from way at the back of the church, a deacon is slowly ... ...

13: The Growing vs. The Dying church
God not on machines! Much evidence of this attitude exists in the church today. When we hold a gospel meeting, we rely mainly on the mass media to draw visitors rather than personal invitation by the members. A second example happens when we use a correspondence course. Our heart places more confidence in the design of the course than in the personal follow-up effort put forth by individuals. So, we search high and low for that perfect course and then sit back and let it do all the converting for us. When results are dismal, we conclude that correspondence courses don't work. Yet, they work very hard! We are the lazy ones! The key to church growth is to activate the general membership to be seekers of the lost. But this is a difficult tradition to overturn. Disinterest in reaching the lost is not the only problem we are battling today. We are also faced with general apathy, poor attendance, compromising of moral standards, and morgue-like worship services. Actually, all these little ... ...

16: Theoretical Overview of correspondence course work
Bible and develop a trust in you as a teacher. Second, to whet their appetite for further Bible study. With my objective, I don't expect to convert the student through the mail. The course should bring a cold contact to the point of being a warm contact. The primary purpose of the course is not to increase their knowledge of the gospel but to increase their commitment level and desire for further study of the gospel. At this point, how they learn is more important than what they learn. My work with correspondence courses does not include two popular objectives often associated with these programs. First, I do not view a correspondence course as a means of merely preaching the gospel. I use newspaper articles instead. They do a better job and are cheaper. A correspondence course can accomplish much more than just giving sinners a hearing of the gospel. Second, I do not view a correspondence course as a means of bringing the student to a point of saving knowledge or even conversion. I ... ...

17: Correspondence course follow-up
The Bible Course, which I wrote and tested locally. If you use a Bible course with all the latest bells and whistles but do not use proper follow-up, it will be a failure. On the other hand, if you use a poorly designed correspondence course but use proper follow-up techniques, you will likely be successful. Of course, for the best possible results you will want to use a well designed course with proper follow-up. Follow-up takes time, energy, boldness, tact, and wisdom and help from the Lord, but follow-up is the critical key to success. Remember, the primary purpose of a Bible course is not to teach them the gospel, but to salt their appetite for further study. A Bible course program stands or falls on the basis of getting personal Bible studies. Personal Bible studies include one-on-one studies, small group studies, and studies using filmstrips. I often hear of churches who have enrolled hundreds of students and spent thousands of dollars but have had very little to show for it. The ... ...

20: Move-in's, Drop-in's, Born-in's & Drag-in's
Some churches are growing because many people are "move-ins" to their area. Others are growing because the church building is in a good location and non-Christians frequently just "drop-in." Finally, others are growing because of the number of members' children being baptized each year, hence, "born-ins." Churches do grow as a result of these three factors, but we would be deceiving ourselves to call it evangelism. Isn't one of our primary purposes as Christian's to get ourselves to heaven and take as many with us as we go? Stop and take a look at the church where you worship and determine the number of new members added over the last year or two. Now, subtract the "move-ins", the "drop-ins", and the "born-ins". What you have left is the number of people that have become Christians as a result of evangelistic work. In 1990, Geoffery Ellis conducted an important study regarding church growth in Ontario. His conclusions were that a congregation averaging 94 members will experience an ... ...

30: Meet Your Neighbour Tea
Wife and I actually tried this one year and it was a great success. We were able to meet as memory serves me, between 10-15 new neighbours who actually did come! This is not the social gospel approach. We merely used this to meet the neighbours. Now remember, this was a personal work, in the wild west of Alberta! We lived in the heart of a city of 55,000 called Lethbridge, at the time. You cannot convert people who have never met!!! Format: 5.5 x 8.5 inches portrait on blue paper You're Invited to an Old Fashoned Meet Your Neighbour Tea Dear Folks, We've lived in this quarter section for a while now and felt it was downright high time that we got to know the kin in this neck of the woods. Saddle up the whole herd and ride on over for a few minutes of what 'dem city folks call "social interaction". 31: Using Surveys to generate leads for Bible study!
Using Surveys to generate leads for Bible study! I have used surveys a lot. They can be effective tools of generating leads for Bible study as you go door to door. You can also use this for "aggressive blitzing" as I call it, by asking people in a mall, a busy street, part etc and asking them to do the survey. One very important note. Surveys do tend to be manipulative and can be perceived as being a dishonest trick. Saying stuff like, "this is not a church membership drive" is not correct. You are trying to find new members for your church. Don't lie to the public! Saying stuff like: "We're trying to better understand the religious beliefs of other people in our community" is also not really true. You don't really care to learn what the false religious beliefs are of the town, you want to teach them the truth from the Bible. Even merely calling it a survey, can be misleading, because you are not really conducting a true survey. You never record or care to record their answers to your ... ...

32: Parable of the Life-Saving Station
The little life-saving station grew. Some of the new members of the life-saving station were unhappy that the building was so crude and so poorly equipped. They felt that a more comfortable place should be provided as the first refuge of those saved from the sea. So they replaced the emergency cots with beds and put better furniture in an enlarged building. Now the life-saving station became a popular gathering place for its members, and they re-decorated it beautifully and furnished it as a sort of club. Less of the members were now interested in going to sea on life-saving missions, so they hired life boat crews to do this work. The mission of life-saving was still given lip-service but most were too busy or lacked the necessary commitment to take part in the life-saving activities personally. About this time a large ship was wrecked off the coast, and the hired crews brought in boat loads of cold, wet, and half-drowned people. They were dirty and sick, and some of them had black ... ...

33: Gospel Meetings: The fabulous congregational letter writing campaign
Gospel meetings are a long-standing tradition in the church. And I might add, a good one. But, are we being as effective as we could be with them as a method of outreach? We have all heard stories of how old brother so and so would baptize 50-100 people every meeting. Those times are gone for a number of reasons. Today, we are lucky if we get one visitor from the community, let alone baptize anyone. When someone asks how many visitors there were at a gospel meeting, the usual answer refers to the number of Christians visiting from other churches. We don't even think in terms of non-Christian visitors any more. We have two choices. We can view the meetings strictly as a time for edifying the saints and close the doors to the public, or we can change our approach to effectively reach non-Christians again. In a recent gospel meeting in which I was involved, we mailed 1900 invitations, placed 1800 on windshields of cars, mailed about 110 to correspondence course students, placed a ... ...

34: Gospel Meetings: The Edification vs. The Evangelistic types
What has changed is almost every aspect of society. Gospel meetings today will never bring the responses of the good old days because of the following reasons: Religion is no longer the focus of society that it once was. Today, it is socially acceptable to be an atheist. People have much less free time in the 1990s and spending an evening at church is low on the list of priorities. Gospel meetings were a form of community entertainment in the 1890s. Today we are entertained by television. The quality of local preaching has dramatically improved to the point that there is little difference between the local preacher and the visiting big name preacher. Today, the supply of sermons far exceeds the demand. People can tune into radio or television any day and hear countless sermons. Additionally, local churches offer several sermons in their own buildings each week. Why would someone from another church attend your meeting when they already have a glut of such meetings to choose from at ... ...

36: Reading the Hearts of Men!
Reading the Hearts of Men! Click to View We marvel at the ability of Jesus to read the hearts of men. This special ability allowed Jesus to know how people were reacting to his teachings. He was then able to tailor a reply that would cut to the heart. The parable of the sower academically identifies four basic kinds of hearers (hearts). The best example of Jesus reading the hearts of men is in Luke 9:57-62: And as they were going along the road, someone said to him, I will follow you wherever you go. And Jesus said to him, The foxes have holes, and the birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head. And he said to another, Follow me. But he said Permit me first to go and bury my father. But he said to him, Allow the dead to bury their own dead; but as for you, go and proclaim everywhere the kingdom of God. And another also said, I will follow you, Lord; but first permit me to say good-bye to those at home. But Jesus said to him, No one, after putting his ... ...

37: 5 Components of a Growing Church
Why doesn't the church grow? The same reason we have so few elders-a lack of faithful children! The role of a parent is not merely to teach his children the gospel but rather to teach his children to teach the gospel to their children. We haven't successfully taught our children the gospel, let alone taught them how to teach their children. We are losing another generation of young people. With the loss of the young people, we lose another generation of qualified men for the eldership. Both problems are symptoms of the same cause. If the track record with our physical children is poor, it is even worse with our spiritual children (new converts). With our spiritual children, we "dunk'em and leave'em". No follow-up. As parents, we rely too much on educating our physical children through the public school system to the neglect of individual spiritual training in the home. In the church, we do the same with our spiritual babes; we rely upon the church's public school system (weekly sermons ... ...

38: Biblical Evangelism: Biblical Guidelines to Effective Evangelism ...
New Testament churches! Some years ago I purchased a fairly comprehensive bibliography of church growth books and set out to critically read them and glean the things I could. Some things in them were wrong but the final messages that filtered out from them said that conservative churches are uniquely positioned to grow in our urban world. I am not an expert but I am an interested student of Biblical evangelism. These are some things that have worked in Bible times and in growing New Testament churches today. There have been some great changes that have taken place in America and in our lives that have deeply affected the answer to the question, "Which evangelistic method is the most effective in urban churches today?" Before World War II, most churches of Christ in America were in rural areas. Today, even the "countryside" is really a suburb and evangelism does not follow the patterns and successes of the 1930's. After an introduction, I will focus on Biblical passages and motivation, ... ...

39: Using "Wisdom Towards Outsiders"
You who preach that one should not steal, do you steal? Click to View "with wisdom toward outsiders . . ." Time should be given to planning objectives when having a discussion with an outsider. But first, as the planning of objectives begins, consider several possible existing conditions of the outsider. What are her beliefs about the Bible? Does she understand that the scriptures are the complete, all-sufficient word of God and not just a collection of writings compiled by man? Does she recognize and respect the authority of the Bible? Does she believe that she can learn and understand the Bible? Does she understand that she has a responsibility to study the Bible? Do not allow her to become discouraged about Bible study just because Peter said, There are some things hard to understand which the untaught and unstable distort (2 Peter 3:16). For a beginner, understanding the Bible may be like algebra to a six-year old overpowering. Time and study will make the Bible be like algebra is ... ...

Are You Guilty of Spiritual Child Abuse? How would you feel toward a mother who regularly overlooked her newborn child's feeding time when the infants cry for milk fell upon indifferent ears?
